WELCOME TO PROVINCIAL MEDICAL

Innovation in health care technology continues to move at lightning speed, while funding issues often limit or restrict universal access. Questions about how a new technology will benefit patients, providers, health system efficiencies and provide cost savings need to be addressed.

What has become universally accepted is the use of evidence-based medicine (EBM) for the basis of appropriate health delivery worldwide. EBM integrates the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to optimize clinical outcomes and quality of life. EBM is the basis for how care will be delivered and paid for in the future.

Patients have always had unique preferences, concerns and expectations. Perhaps the most significant and irreversible trend influencing patient attitude is the evolution of the information culture. The Internet has made information readily available on every conceivable health care topic.

It is no longer a valid question to debate whether patients should be given access to complex medical information. They are reading clinical practice guidelines, consensus panel information and reports from clinical trials. Baby Boomers have a desire for control and involvement in the decision-making process regarding their health care and that of their family members. They are more than willing to challenge the status quo.

The uptake, diffusion and distribution of new health technologies will surely accelerate as evidence-based medicine converges with the higher expectations of the Baby Boomer generation.
